TAMPA - A Tampa man and a teenager were arrested late Sunday night after a short police chase that ended when the car they were in, which was reported stolen, crashed. Today, police continued to search for an unidentified man who jumped out of the car while it was being pursued.
No one was injured in the crash, which damaged the 1999 Ford Taurus. One man was spotted trying to hide behind a home on State Street. He was identified as 20-year-old Kalem Lavar Capers, 4203 Laurel St. The other was identified as Michael R. Hammonds, 17, of 4110 W. Grace St. He was the driver of the car, police said.
Officers spotted the stolen vehicle about 11 p.m. Sunday heading south on Tampa Street near Columbus Drive and gave chase.
The Taurus crashed into a curb on Howard Avenue at Lemon Street, police said.
Capers was charged with auto theft, auto burglary, burglary of a structure and resisting arrest without violence. He remained in the Orient Road Jail this morning. Bail was not set.
He also was charged on outstanding warrants charging him with violating probation on a variety of charges, including cocaine possession, obstruction and criminal mischief.
Hammonds was charged with auto theft, fleeing police, auto burglary, culpable negligence and driving without a valid driver's license.
The Taurus was reported stolen from the 4000 block of West Arch Street on Sunday night, and police say it was used as a getaway car in an armed robbery.
The third occupant of the car jumped out near North Massachusetts Avenue and West Park Street long before the crash occurred, police said.
