Massachusetts is home to the nation's Thanksgiving Day heritage. New York hosts the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. But Las Vegas has become the hot Thanksgiving destination, according to an Orbitz.com report on the holiday's busiest airports.
Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport ranks as the No. 1 destination for airline tickets the online travel agency booked for travel from today through Saturday. A year ago, Las Vegas ranked No. 10.
Of course, New York and Chicago might be inclined to holler: "Hold on, pilgrim."
If the report had combined the three primary New York-area airports or Chicago's two major airports, Las Vegas would slide down the list.
But Las Vegas' rise in rank merits notice.
What's up? Or rather, what's down?
Hotel prices in Las Vegas are being offered at deep discounts for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, with five-star hotels offering the mid-$100s, online travel sites report.
As for other destinations, New York's LaGuardia Airport ranked second this year, followed by Chicago O'Hare International, Los Angeles International and San Francisco International, the Orbitz.com report showed.
Last year, Chicago ranked first, followed by Los Angeles and Denver.
Tampa International Airport ranked No. 47 as a Christmas holiday destination. Data for Thanksgiving was not immediately available.
