ST. LEO - Hoping to understand others' suffering, a group of Saint Leo University students and teachers went 24 hours without food to raise awareness of hunger in Haiti.
The fast was a project by the university's Haitian Education Project, which helps support the Marie Pont du Ciel Orphanage in Cap Haitian. HEP members raised about $100 in donations. They asked students to donate $5 - enough to feed a single orphan for a week, they said.
"What we're doing, fasting for 24 hours, is to learn what hunger feels like," said Rose Woodward, wife of theology professor Randall Woodard. "We become better people ourselves by doing that."

Public Workshop To Discuss Gall Boulevard Conversion
ZEPHYRHILLS - A public information workshop is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 1 to answer questions and hear concerns about the Florida Department of Transportation's plans to convert U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills to a pair of one-way streets.
The $70 million project, scheduled for construction in 2015, would convert a 1.8-mile stretch of Gall Boulevard, also known as U.S. 301, into a one-way street for northbound traffic. Southbound traffic would be diverted to Sixth Street, which is already one way.
The DOT held public hearings in 2001 when the project was in its early design phase. The workshop will give the public and business owners another chance to comment, but it is too late to change the design. The Federal Highway Administration has signed off on the project.
The workshop will be at the Alice Hall Community Center, 38116 Fifth Ave.

Road Work Shifts Parking For Suncoast Trail
LUTZ - People who enter the Suncoast Trail at Lutz-Lake Fern Road will have to park in a temporary lot west of the trail during construction on the new interchange for the Suncoast Parkway.
The temporary lot will have 27 spaces, two of which are designated for disabled parking by permit. The lot will be open until the interchange is finished next summer.
The trailhead provides access at the southern terminus of the multi-use, 42-mile trail stretching from Hillsborough County to Hernando County. Hillsborough County maintains the trailhead as part of its trail system. The county plans to build a new trailhead with 120 parking spaces and amenities sometime in the future.
