TAMPA - The Greater St. Petersburg Area Awesome Original Second Time Arounders is one of 10 bands that will be marching in the 82nd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.
The 500-member band is expected to reach the "star" in front of Macy's at approximately 11 a.m. The parade will be broadcast live on NBC from 9 a.m. to noon.
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker is scheduled to carry a Florida banner as the group marches in New York. He is not a member of the band.
Ranging in age from 18 to 85, the band celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. It is reportedly the largest permanent volunteer marching band in the world. The group consists of former high school, college and military marching band members from around the Bay area.
The group has performed at numerous events in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area, from the St. Petersburg Festival of States to Super Bowl parades. It also has traveled to events throughout the United States.
One of the most notable members is WTVT, Channel 13, anchor John Wilson.
The group is scheduled to perform locally at the Santa Parade in downtown St. Petersburg on Dec. 6.
