TAMPA - Newsome picked up its 10th win of the season as two first-half goals from the Wolves proved enough to get past a hungry, young Wharton team, 2-1.
"We survived this game, definitely," Wolves coach Kelly Townsend said. "Wharton is young and quick."
The Wolves struck first in the 18th minute as Karina Gutsche drew out and went around Wildcats keeper Rachel Beninati and sent in a header on an open net.
The second Newsome goal came a minute later after a pass from Ana Cate came between two Wolves in front of the box and was driven to the right of Beninati by Liz Haumschild.
Despite the two early Wolves' goals, the play from Wharton's keeper was solid as the sophomore had 12 saves, including seven in the second half. Beninati's play in the second half didn't go unnoticed by her opponent's coach.
"Wharton's keeper played really well tonight," Townsend said of Beninati. "She made some incredible saves in the second half."
Wharton struggled to find a rhythm on offense in the first half with strong runs by striker Kate Demick going nowhere with little help up top. However, in the second half, Wharton found some help for Demick and it resulted in a nice pass from the senior to Shelby Million, who scored the lone goal for the Wildcats.
Newsome also had strong play on offense from senior Ashley Evers, who seemed omnipresent in every run the Wolves made in the second half.
"[Ashley] is great," Townsend said. "Once we get balls coming down the line, she beats the ball – and the defender – every time."
