A Sun City pond surrounded by homes has some bacteria in it, but tests conducted this week cannot pinpoint the cause, county officials said today.
The county's Water Resource Services department conducted the tests after residents complained the county was pumping groundwater near a sewer leak into a drain that ran into the pond. The pond, called Middle Lake, is surrounded by 103 homes.
Preliminary test results this afternoon showed higher-than-normal levels of fecal coliform bacteria in wellpoints around the lake and somewhat lower levels in the lake itself, but until further tests are completed the county won't know whether the bacteria came from the leaking pipeline.
The leaking pipeline was discovered Wednesday. The water table in that area is high, and workers pumped out the groundwater near the leaking pipe so the pipe could be excavated.
