Troopers have identified a man killed while trying to cross a busy Interstate 4 near Interstate 75 Wednesday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Kenneth Marvin Kellum, 56, of Lakeland died after his Ford F-150 pickup truck ran out of gas on Interstate 75 South near I-4, troopers say. Kellum left his truck and went to look for a gas station.
After he got gasoline, he was walking back to his truck and tried to cross I-4 East near the I-75 exit about 6:30 p.m., troopers say. He was struck by a 2004 Mini Cooper driven by Caridad Canales, 53, of Orlando, the highway patrol said.
Kellum died at the scene, troopers say. Canales was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital with minor injuries.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of the highway for almost three hours. Motorists were detoured to I-75 while authorities investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
