TAMPA - The NFL announced that Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. It marks the eighth time in his career Barber earned the honor.
Barber had two interceptions Sunday at Detroit, returning one 65 yards for a touchdown. He also had five tackles in the Buccaneers' 38-20 win over the Lions that improved Tampa Bay's record to 8-3, first in the NFC South Division.
His first interception in the second quarter set up the go-ahead touchdown to tight end Jerramy Stevens. Barber returned his second interception 65 yards for his 13th career touchdown, including the postseason.
This marks the 33rd time a Bucs player has been named Defensive Player of the Week. Linebacker Derrick Brooks won the award in Week 4.
Barber will square off Sunday against this week's NFC Offensive Player of the Week, New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees. Brees was 20-for-26 for 323 yards and four TDs in the Saints' 51-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The Saints (6-5) trail the Bucs and Carolina Panthers by two games in the NFC South standings but beat Tampa Bay 24-20 in the season opener Sept. 7.
