The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Pasco County, which is in effect 2 to 8 a.m. Thursday.
A three- to five-hour period of extremely cold weather will settle in the area tonight into Thursday morning with temperatures bottoming out in the upper 20s inland and to the lower 30s near the coast, a news release from Pasco County Emergency Management stated. . Winds are forecast to be 5 mph then becoming light toward morning. Combined with the cold lower temperatures Pasco residents can anticipate wind chill as low as 19 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
Residents are encouraged to necessary steps to protect water pipes from freezing by draining the pipe, or wrapping the pipe. Additionally, residents are encouraged to shelter animals indoors if possible. Cold sensitive plants should be brought indoors or covered.
In response to the forecasted cold weather, the following locations will be opened to provide shelter for those in need:
