SEFFNER - There was a time when 200 or more volunteers would drive to farm fields across the county as a way to help the needy.
Today, a group once known as the Gleaners of Hillsborough County is regrouping, and in the process it is seeking volunteers ready to pick tomatoes, grapefruit, strawberries or whatever else is in season to supplement food banks and church organizations.
Society of St. Andrew – Hillsborough Gleaners – will make its first trip into the fields under its new moniker on Saturday, visiting tomato fields in Wimauma. For directions, call founder Gene Shewfelt at (813) 689-8621.
