Since Day One at Florida State University - which, actually, is going on 12,000 days ago for Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden - he has understood his primary job description.
"You've got to beat those folks down the road," Bowden said. "Got to beat the Gators."
Bowden's Seminoles snapped a program-worst nine-game losing streak to Florida during his second season (1977) and enjoyed many high points since. But lately, it has been a struggle.
Bowden is now just 17-16-1 overall against the Gators. Saturday in Tallahassee, he'll try to avoid a fifth straight defeat.
"I used to tease Coach Bowden all the time," said FSU president T.K. Wetherell, a receiver during the 1960s. "He'd talk about winning this or winning that. I'd just say, 'Did you beat Florida?' For people in my era, that was the game we aimed at."
In many ways, nothing has changed. Bowden knows that concept.
With Bowden's 35th meeting with Florida at hand, here's a look at his life and times against the Gators:
