TAMPA - In a matchup between two of the top boys basketball teams in the Tampa Bay area, Oldsmar Christian got the best of Berkeley Prep, 55-49, in both teams' season opener Tuesday.
"This was a rematch from last year," said Oldsmar senior guard Chris Perez, who scored a game-high 21 points. "We were hungry to get that loss back."
Senior center Harold Doby added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while senior guard A.J. Williams finished with 14 points.
Senior guard Johnathan Gray led Berkeley Prep with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Perez defended Gray the entire second half.
"He was hitting those 3s," he said. "He's a big-time player and I'm a big-time player, too, so I had to shut him down."
Berkeley senior forwards Austin Suarez and Christian Reintgen added 12 and eight points, respectively.
"They did a good job of spreading us out and using their quickness," Berkeley coach Bobby Reinhart said. "We had some easy scoring opportunities that we squandered."
