TAMPA - To head off holiday thieves, Tampa police will patrol shopping malls between now and Christmas on horseback, on motorcycles and in unmarked cars.
Officers will begin these special patrols this morning at WestShore Plaza. The extra police presence aims to prevent car burglaries and other property crimes.
Police offered these other tips for shoppers so their bargains don't get swiped:
• Lock your car doors and windows even if you're gone only a few minutes.
• Keep packages and valuables out of view, preferably in the trunk.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of money. Pay with debit or credit cards whenever possible.
• Don't overburden yourself with packages. Have purchases delivered whenever practical.
• Shop before dark if possible. Bring a friend if you plan to be out late.
• Park near street lights and have your keys in hand when you return to your car. Always check the interior before you unlock your door to get in.
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you see people hanging around parking garages, parking lots or outside stores, avoid the area and alert police or store security.
