Published: November 26, 2008

System: Sony PlayStation 3

Also available for: Microsoft Xbox 360

Publisher: Midway

Reviewer's rating: ***1/2

ESRB rating: Teen

Game type: Fighting

Kind of like: "Marvel vs. Street Fighter"

Best feature: The Kombo Challenge mode teaches you some brutal and tricky combos.

Worst feature: The Arcade mode endings are just a picture with a voiceover.

The bottom line: "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe" brings together two worlds that nobody ever expected to collide.

"Mortal Kombat" has always been silly and violent, but also fun, and this game adds a lot of fun in the form of Batman, Superman, Captain Marvel and more.

The game's story mode explains the plot. Superman blasts Darkseid through a dimensional gate at the same time that Raiden does the same to Shao Khan. The coincidence fuses the two dimensions, which basically means everybody has to fight everybody. After all, it's a fighting game.

There's an almost epic story mode in this game, with two versions. You can pick the DC-oriented tale or the "Mortal Kombat" one. Most story modes in fighting games are terrible, but this one is pretty good. In contrast is Arcade mode, which has dull voiceover endings.

The DC characters have some really cool moves. There are plenty of devastating combos, and the game's Kombo Challenge mode will teach you some of the nasty ones.

Some new features to "Mortal Kombat" include midair fighting. If you knock someone off a stage, you can fight while you're both falling. There's also a new gimmick where you grab the opponent and the camera zooms in. The grabber can punch the opponent up to four times, but if the defender guesses which punch button is being used, the grab is reversed.

For a "Mortal Kombat" game, this game is not that violent. It's actually rated Teen instead of Mature, because there's more pummeling and less gore.

Games are rated on a scale of 0-4 stars.
