Plasencia Commits To Northwestern

Jesuit's John Plasencia will remain a "Cat" at the next level.

The Tigers tight end/defensive end verbally committed to Northwestern, picking the Wildcats over a host of other Division I schools, including Vanderbilt, Cincinnati and Syracuse.

He returned from a trip to Harvard this past weekend, having narrowed his decision to the Ivy League school and the Wildcats, and he picked Northwestern.

"I really feel like I'm going to the best school for me," Plasencia said. "It's the best fit for me. They have the perfect mix of academics and athletics.

"I immediately felt it was a place I could see myself spending the next four or five years of my life."

Plasencia finished his senior season second on the team in receiving with 23 receptions for 256 yards and one touchdown. He was also second on the team with 62 tackles and three sacks.

VOLLEYBALL: Plant senior outside hitter Danielle Erb has been picked to play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Volleyball Classic at River Ridge High on Dec. 6, Panthers coach Leanna Taylor said.

Erb, who has signed with James Madison, helped the nationally ranked Panthers win their third consecutive Class 5A state title Saturday.

Berkeley Prep senior setter/libero Christina Theofilos also has been selected for the all-star classic.

BASKETBALL: A few area teams were ranked in the state's preseason boys basketball poll. In 6A, Sickles was ranked No. 5 while Lakeland just missed the cut. Clearwater was ranked No. 4 in 5A, while Ridgewood was ranked No. 7. Bloomingdale and King also received votes.

Berkeley Prep was ranked No. 5 in 3A, Tampa Prep No. 3 in 2A, and Seffner Christian No. 10 in 1A. Bayshore Christian received votes in the 1A poll.

In other news, Plant High freshman guard Michael Frazier, Tampa Prep freshman guard Devontae Morgan and Oldsmar Christian freshman forward Quinci Mitchell were named to the ESPNU 100 To Watch list for the Class of 2012.
