ST. PETERSBURG - Two suspected car thieves were arrested Thursday night after the car they were in, which was being chased by Pinellas County sheriff's deputies, crashed into a home in Gulfport.

Joe Lewis Bradford, 20, of 4057 Ninth Ave. S., and Darryl D. Jenkins, 20, of 4702 15th Ave. S. were caught after they got out of the wrecked 2006 Saturn and ran, deputies said. They were tracked by dogs and arrested an hour and a half later within three blocks of the crash.

Deputies spotted the car speeding and later found out it had been reported stolen. They tried to pull the car over shortly before 10 p.m. on Tyrone Boulevard near 71st St. N. The car crashed into a home at 1202 58th St. S. in Gulfport four minutes later. Both suspects suffered injuries in the crash, but they were not life-threatening, deputies said. Both were taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where they were admitted for treatment.

No one else was injured.

Bradford, deputies said, was the driver of the car.

Deputies said they found crack cocaine and a handgun that had been reported stolen last year in the wrecked Saturn.

Bradford was charged with grand theft of an auto, grand theft of a firearm, driving with a suspended or revoked license, possession of cocaine, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Jenkins was charged with grand theft of an auto and resisting arrest without violence. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants charging him with violation of probation on an unrelated charges of possession and sale of cocaine.
