Maryland Upends 5th-Ranked Michigan St.

LAKE BUENA VISTA - Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points, and unranked Maryland hustled its way to an 80-62 upset of No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday at the Old Spice Classic.

After falling behind by three early in the first half, the Terrapins (4-0) countered with a 23-5 run to take the lead for good.

Maryland held Spartans star Raymar Morgan to four points and shot 9-for-19 on 3-pointers to 2-for-9 for Michigan State.

The Terrapins also were much better at the free-throw line, going 17 of 21 while Michigan State was 12 of 27. Travis Walton led the Spartans (2-1) with 16 points.

Morgan got into early foul trouble and was never a factor. He took just three shots in 14 minutes

Maryland today will play the winner of the game between No. 9 Gonzaga and Oklahoma State.

NO. 12 TENNESSEE 78, SIENA 64
Wayne Chism scored 15 points to lead No. 12 Tennessee to a win against Siena in the first round of the Old Spice Classic.
Renaldo Woolridge and Tyler Smith each added 14 for the Vols (4-0). Alex Franklin led Siena (2-1) with 17.

The Vols went on a 17-0 run late in the first half and pulled away to a 47-27 halftime lead. Siena scored the first 11 points of the second half, but could not get closer than nine. The Vols led by as many as 21 in the second half.

Bothered by the Vols' man pressure defense and inside strength, Siena missed seven shots and turned the ball over seven times during Tennessee's first half run, including on four straight possessions.

Siena scored the first 11 points of the second half to draw within 47-38.

NO. 19 WAKE FOREST 75,

CAL STATE FULLERTON 69

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jeff Teague had 24 points and Al-Farouq Aminu and Chas McFarland added 14 each as No. 19 Wake Forest overcame a slow start to hold off Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the 76 Classic.

Wake Forest will (4-0) now play UTEP (3-1), a 75-62 winner against St. Mary's, in the semifinals today.

The Demon Deacons led by as many as 15 early in the second half.

Wake Forest committed 11 of its 18 turnovers in the second half and Fullerton (2-3) made seven 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes.

NO. 21 GEORGETOWN 58,

WICHITA STATE 50

Austin Freeman scored 18 points and DaJuan Summers added 14 to lead No. 21 Georgetown past Wichita State in a first-round game at the Old Spice Classic.

Greg Monroe added 11 points for Georgetown (3-0), which will play No. 12 Tennessee today.

Georgetown preserved the victory by making all eight free throws during the last minute of the game. Wichita State (2-2) got 11 points from David Kyles.

LATE WEDNESDAY: Tyler Hansbrough, playing in just his third game of the season because of leg injuries, had 34 points as No. 1 North Carolina (6-0) won the EA Sports Maui Invitational 102-87 against No. 8 Notre Dame (4-1).

USC: Sophomore forward Kasey Cunningham is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday.
