Published: November 29, 2008

NAPLES - Authorities say a deputy driving an unmarked vehicle struck a Collier County ambulance carrying a 70-year-old patient, causing the ambulance to overturn.

Florida Highway Patrol reports that the deputy, who was driving a sport utility vehicle, and the paramedic driving the ambulance both claim they had the right of way during Friday morning's crash. The vehicles were passing through a Naples intersection when the SUV struck the ambulance in the left rear, knocking it on its right side.

The patient on board the ambulance was airlifted to a Fort Myers hospital with critical injuries. FHP says both drivers sustained minor injuries, but another paramedic in the ambulance appeared to have broken her pelvis.

FHP was reviewing witness statements to determine fault.
