Published: November 29, 2008

ST. LEO - Players on Saint Leo's women's basketball team were able to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday and the weekend without any losses to distract them.

The Lions (6-0) won their first road game of the season, 63-58 at Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, to continue their perfect campaign going into a week off before next Saturday's Sunshine State Conference opener at Barry.

The victory against the Sailfish was the closest of SLU's wins; every other victory was by at least 13 points.

Dominique Daniels and Melissa Guerero are leading the way offensively, averaging 11.8 and 10.5 points per game, respectively. Daniels leads in rebounding (6.0) as well, while Whitley Washington is dishing out 6.2 assists per contest. Marquita Fenn, the team's leading scorer before missing all of last season, has returned to average 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

MEN FALL SHORT: The Lions men (3-2) dropped a 72-62 decision to Division I-A Cleveland State for their first loss of the season Monday and followed with a 76-60 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic.

Reigning SSC player of the week Jordan Prais (22.0 points, 7.4 rebounds per game) remains a bright spot, making nearly 75 percent of his field-goal attempts and scoring 19 and 25 points, respectively, in the losses. Josue Vazquez and Kyle Rowland are averaging 12.6 points each.

The men have this weekend off before a busy travel schedule kicks off next weekend. They are headed to the Loop Pizza Grill Classic in Valdosta, Ga., where they will play Valdosta State and West Alabama.

After that, they are off to the west coast and beyond, for road games at Seattle Pacific, Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks.

VOLLEYBALL HONORS KEEP COMING: Despite a heartbreaking five-set loss to Nova Southeastern that ended its season, the Lions volleyball team continues to receive regional honors after the most successful season in program history.

Setter Michelle Nogueras and middle blockers Danielle Bletso and Kaitlin McKenna were named to the AVCA D-II Coaches' All-South Region Team, and Bletso was named freshman of the year, the same award McKenna won a year ago.

Nogueras, one of only three current members of the team to be named in multiple years, had 1,349 assists and a .343 attack percentage.

McKenna hit .401 (among the top 10 nationally in D-II) and Bletso averaged 2.5 blocks per set.
