Help Needed For Teens In Foster Care

RIVERVIEW - Christmas isn't just for young children.

It's also for teens, including the hundreds in foster care throughout Hillsborough County - some of whom arrived at their temporary homes with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing when they left abusive or neglectful homes.

During the holidays, Foster Angels of Hillsborough County steps in.

The nonprofit group targets 300-400 foster teens by hanging their names and needs or wants on Christmas trees throughout the county.

"The teens have always been our biggest challenge, because people tend to think of Christmas for the little ones. But it's for all the foster kids," said Angels founder Mac MacNeel.

"Gift cards are the biggest hit. That way, they can get exactly what they want, the color they want, the brand they want, everything," he said. Gift cards for Target, Old Navy and Wal-Mart are among the most popular.

Donations to Foster Angels are tax deductible, and the program does provide receipts, MacNeel said.
