IRON MAN ***½

The summer of Robert Downey Jr. began with this well-reviewed comic-book adaptation, in which he stars as wealthy playboy/arms dealer Tony Stark, who gains a conscience - and a really cool robotic suit - after being kidnapped by terrorists who use his company's weapons. Rounding out the powerhouse cast are Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow.

PG-13, 126 minutes

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL ***

Jason Segel, who wrote and stars in this comedy of male humiliation, is a small-time composer whose TV-star girlfriend (Kristen Bell) dumps him for a smarmy British pop star. In time-honored sitcom fashion, he then ends up vacationing at the same Hawaiian resort with the sex-crazed couple - and sympathetic hotel employee Mila Kunis.

R, 112 minutes

CHAPTER 27

Jared Leto apparently gained 70 pounds to play portly psycho Mark David Chapman, most of it by chewing up the scenery in this dull biopic of the man who killed John Lennon. Convinced that he is a latter-day Holden Caulfield ("The Catcher in the Rye"), Chapman believes that he must kill Lennon, but not before torturing the audience with his ostentatious insanity.

R, 85 minutes
