NEW PORT RICHEY - A woman riding a scooter west on Main Street was struck head-on by a sport utility vehicle this morning and flown to an area hospital, police said.
The driver of the SUV was headed east on Main, veering left onto Old Main Street, when he hit the woman's scooter just before 9 a.m., New Port Richey police Officer Keith Campbell said.
"He said the sun was in his eyes, which was possible," Campbell said at the scene, adding that the SUV's driver never stopped before hitting the scooter.
The names of both drivers haven't been released yet, but the woman is about 20 years old.
The woman's pink scooter ended up wedged under the older-model Ford Explorer's front bumper. A flip-flop was about 12 feet from the scooter on Main, and someone had placed her pink, skull print backpack on the SUV's hood.
A bumper stick on the back of the brown Explorer read: "Watch out for motorcycles."
The woman was flown by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for possible head and femur injuries. She was conscious, police said.
Officers are still investigating the scene. A section of Main, east of Van Buren Street, as well as a small part of Old Main are closed in both directions.
