YBOR CITY - Fresh from cranking out two home runs during his first playoff game, Tampa Bay Rays star Evan Longoria helped children with cancer Friday.
The first of hundreds of T-shirts were printed this morning at the Red Onions shop on Third Avenue. The pink-and-blue shirts had two designs. One says, "Evan Almighty"; the other says, "Got Evan? We Do."
The shirts will be sold at retail shops across the Bay area for about $20. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Children's Cancer Center, said Richard Moore of Encore Select, the marketing company that is overseeing the project.
He said the unveiling of the shirts could not have come at a better time. Longoria smacked a pair of homers in Thursday's playoff game, leading the worst-to-first-place Rays to a crucial win over the visiting Chicago White Sox.
"This had been in discussions for about a month," Moore said.
Longoria was not present.
The first run of shirts, at least 1,200, was expected to be shipped out Friday.
