Tampa Bay submitted its final 24-man roster for today's season-opening game against the New York Rangers in Prague, Czech Republic, and defenseman Jamie Heward was a surprise addition.
Andrew Hutchinson, signed to a two-year contract in the summer, was placed on waivers Thursday and is expected to be assigned to Norfolk of the American Hockey League.
Heward, 37, was a training camp invitee but was among the team's first cuts. No official word has come from the club regarding Heward, but he is believed to officially still be on a tryout agreement, although a contract announcement is expected when the team returns to Tampa.
Heward, who has 381 games of NHL experience, is eligible to play this weekend.
In addition, the Lightning announced that Marty St. Louis and defenseman Andrej Meszaros will serve as alternate captains for the season.
Vinny Lecavalier was named captain early in training camp.
