Lakeland Edges Killian, Stays Unbeaten

Published: October 4, 2008

LAKELAND - Lakeland overcame a late fourth-quarter surge by visiting Miami Killian to remain undefeated, winning 27-21 in a showdown between two of the state's elite teams.

The Cougars (4-1) took the early lead when running back Lamar Miller took the second play from scrimmage 64 yards for the score.

Miller finished the night with 24 carries for 141 yards.

The Miami advantage was quickly nullified as the Dreadnaughts answered with a six-play, 66-yard drive that ended in a 1-yard run by back Rodney Watson.

Lakeland (5-0) scored twice more before the half with a 23-yard run by Aaron Truedell and a 50-yard punt return by Javares McRoy giving the Dreadnaughts a 21-7 lead.

But what turned out to be the game-winning score was the most bizarre play of the night. Truedell took a lateral from Lakeland quarterback Jarred Haggins, and was pushed back by the Miami defense, fumbling the ball.

The Cougars thought the play was dead, but the referee did not blow the whistle and lineman Caleb Pickrell picked the ball up and ran 60 yards for a touchdown.

"I think we just caught them off guard," Lakeland coach Bill Castle said. "They were trying to get the ball from Truedell, and that's when the ball popped out, and I don't think they saw it."

The Cougars scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to six, but Lakeland recovered an attempted onside kick to seal the game.
