METAIRIE, La. - Top draft pick Sedrick Ellis will be lost to the New Orleans Saints for two to four weeks with a right knee injury.
Ellis, the No. 7 overall selection in last April's draft, tore the medial meniscus in his knee during the Saints' win last Sunday against San Francisco and had arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear Friday morning.
He left Thursday's practice after hearing what he said was "kind of a click" in his knee. Coach Sean Payton said the "click" is symptomatic of a typical meniscus injury.
Ellis has started all four games this season for the Saints (2-2), and racked up 11 tackles and one sack.
His loss hampers the Saints' defensive line greatly as the Minnesota Vikings and Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson come to New Orleans on Monday night.
Payton also said it's fortunate the injury wasn't more severe, but Ellis' knee tear was serious enough to merit having surgery right away.
"Basically what they explain it is that it's a little bucket-hand tear," Payton said.
VICK FINANCES: Lawyers for Michael Vick have asked a federal bankruptcy judge to appoint a mediator to help settle his financial obligations with creditors.
At a hearing Friday in Newport News, Va., lawyer Paul Campsen indicated that court-ordered mediation would make sense and save money.
Judge Frank J. Santoro told a representative of several creditors to make sure mediation would be acceptable to them before he appoints a mediator.
EAGLES: Running back Brian Westbrook was a full participant in practice for the first time in two weeks and appears likely to play Sunday against Washington.
JAGUARS: Safety Reggie Nelson (knee) and cornerback Drayton Florence (groin) will miss Sunday night's game against Pittsburgh.
RAVENS: Starting cornerback Samari Rolle underwent neck surgery this week and will be out at least a month. Rolle suffered a stinger in a victory Sept. 21 against the Cleveland Browns after intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter.
SEAHAWKS: Deion Branch will start Sunday against the New York Giants, eight months after the veteran receiver had reconstructive knee surgery.
