THE DIFFERENCE: The Gryphons (1-4) had lost 15 starters to injury at one point this season, but were able to move the ball on the ground and slow down the Bulls (3-2) to control field position throughout. Versatile Jameel Gay made several key catches and was a staple of the Gryphons' defense the entire game, playing offense and defense.
GAME NOTES: It was the first win of the season for Sickles, but Coach Pat O'Brien said he and his team never gave up hope even though it has a big district game coming up against Chamberlain. ... Andres Vasquez kicked the winning 27-yard field goal. He is a freshman and had to wait after Bloomingdale called a timeout to freeze him. His kick split the uprights. Vasquez had been hobbled by a hip flexor injury and was also hit during an earlier extra-point attempt. O'Brien said he wouldn't have allowed Vasquez any chance if the kick was more than 30 yards because of the injury.
STAT OF THE GAME: Sickles held Bloomingdale running back Derek Johnson to 32 rushing yards after Johnson ran for an 80-yard first-quarter touchdown.
QUOTE OF THE GAME: "I kept telling the kids to hold it together, even after we were 0-4. I had them celebrate with a victory dance and just told them that whatever they do, they should just go out and have some fun." - O'Brien
