The White Sox averted a sweep of their American League Division Series with the Rays, turning a three-run fourth inning into a 5-3 win tonight in Chicago.
Dewayne Wise was the offensive catalyst for the White Sox, scoring their first run and driving in two more in the decisive fourth inning.
It was the first playoff loss in franchise history for the Rays, who opened the ALDS with two home wins.
John Danks (1-0) got the win for Chicago, pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Bobby Jenks surrendered one hit in the ninth to pick up the save.
Game 4 will be played Monday night in Chicago.
Matt Garza (0-1) took the loss for the Rays after allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings. Garza had four strikeouts and walked four.
B.J. Upton belted a two-run home run, scoring Rocco Baldelli, to bring the Rays within 5-3 in the seventh inning.
Baldelli walked to open the seventh for the Rays againstDanks. Jason Bartlett struck out and Aki Iwamura flied out, but Upton crushed a Danks pitch deep into the left field seats.
When Carlos Pena followed that with a single, Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen replaced Danks with Octavio Dotel. Dotel struck out Evan Longoria to end the threat.
Juan Uribe singled, scoring pinch-runner Brian Anderson to give the Chicago a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning.
Anderson was in the game for Ken Griffey Jr., who walked to open the innning. It marked the third time that Garza had allowed a leadoff hitter to reach base and then score.
Uribe stole second base and moved to third on a Garza wild pitch, but Garza struck out Orlando Carbrera to end the inning.
Wise hit a 2-run double to cap a 3-run fourth inning for Chicago, giving the White Sox a 4-1 lead.
Wise's double scored Paul Konerko and Griffey. Jim Thome, who led off the inning with a double, had earlier scored on a sacrifice fly by Alexei Ramirez.
In the third inning, Wise scored on a two-out single by A.J. Pierzynski, pulling the White Sox into a 1-1 tie with the Rays.
Garza walked Wise to open the bottom of the third, and Wise stole second base with two outs and Pierzynski at the plate, Pierzynski stroked a single to center field and the game was tied.
Iwamura's RBI single scored Dioner Navarro to give the Rays a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Iwamura hit a slow-rolling grounder up the first base line and reached first base without a throw to plate Navarro, who starting things off with a one-out double off Danks.
A passed ball allowed Iwamura to take second and Bartlett, who walked, to move up to third base, but Upton flied out to left to end the inning.
The Rays had two baserunners with one out in the first inning, but Danks got out of the jam.
Iwamura led off with a single and moved to third on Pena's single after Upton struck out.
That put runners on first and third with one out, but Danks got Longoria to fly out to right field and Carl Crawford grounded out to Danks.
Garza worked a very quick bottom of the first, retiring Carbrera, Pierzynski and Jermaine Dye in order.
