A car driving through heavy rain in Clearwater on Sunday afternoon hydroplaned and crashed into a public bus shelter, killing a pedestrian, police said.
The driver of the 2005 Nissan, Katerina Wyakimovich, 31, of Tarpon Springs, was not hurt, Clearwater police said. The pedestrian has not been identified because relatives have not been notified.
Police say this is what happened about 6:30 p.m.:
Wyakimovich was driving east on Gulf to Bay Boulevard and approaching Park Place Boulevard when her Nissan apparently drove through a puddle of water and hydroplaned. Wyakimovich lost control of the car and veered toward a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus shelter.
The pedestrian was inside the shelter taking cover from the rain. The Nissan crashed into the shelter and the pedestrian died at the scene.
The road was closed for more than three hours, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
