TAMPA - Transportation officials this week are trying to avoid a repeat the massive traffic jam three weeks ago that snarled thousands of Monday morning commuters on State Road 60.
Workers that morning had moved the airport and Spruce Street exits to the left side of southbound S.R. 60 to give them room to build a ramp. Despite a week of signs warning commuters about the change, the stretch south of the Courtney Campbell Parkway turned into a tangled mess.
The stage is set for a similar meltdown this week after the department moves the airport exit back to the road's right side. The Spruce exit will stay on the left until December.
The move is set for 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
DOT spokesman John McShaffrey said better timing and signs should make for a smoother transition this time. Having the change occur on a Tuesday instead of Monday gives the department an extra day to warn commuters.
McShaffrey's advice: Allow extra time for your commute, and if you're heading to the airport, get into the right lane as soon as possible.
