SEMINOLE - Two Pinellas Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a pit bull this morning after it charged at one man and his dog, charged at a couple who tried to help the man and then charged at deputies, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
At no point did the pit bull bite anyone, Pinellas Sheriff's spokeswoman Cecilia Barreda said.
Deputies were called to 10357 111th Ave. at about 9:30 a.m. after authorities received reports that a pit bull was loose and had charged at the man walking his dog and then at the couple who tried to intervene, Barreda said.
Deputy Arthur McSorley tried to get the dog into his squad car but the pit bull tried to bite his leg, Barreda said. As the dog continued to attack, McSorley fired one round at the animal and it fled toward its home at 10329 111th Ave., Barreda said.
Then the dog turned around and charged at McSorley again, Barreda said. McSorley fired another round. The dog then ran around the block, returned and hid in the backyard of his home.
As McSorley, sheriff's Cpl. Heather Thompson and two Pinellas County animal control officers went into the backyard to take the dog, it again charged, and McSorley and Thompson fired their weapons, killing the dog, Barreda said.
Witnesses said the dog had been chained alongside another pit bull in an open carport in front of the home, but that it had broken free, Barreda said.
