Titans RB Hurts Knee, Hamstring
Tampa Bay Tech junior RB Darius Anderson will miss the rest of the season after suffering injuries to his knee and hamstring during the Titans' win Friday against Spoto, Tampa Bay Tech coach C.C. Culpepper said Monday.
Anderson, the Titans' starting halfback who had 130 rushing yards and was averaging 6.1 yards per carry entering last week's game, suffered torn knee ligaments (ACL, MCL and LCL) and a torn hamstring.
The loss is a huge blow to the running game for the Titans (5-0), who travel to Armwood (5-0) on Friday in a matchup of unbeaten Hillsborough County teams. Culpepper said junior D'Andre Fulton will move into Anderson's starting spot, while junior Jameel Jackson should see an increased role.
In a bit of good news, however, Culpepper said junior LB Sam Jones, who was feared to have been lost for the season a few weeks ago because of a knee injury, will make his return this week against the Hawks.
Jones suffered a partially torn ACL in his left knee, but the coach said Jones will try to play through the pain.
In other news, Freedom (1-3) will be without its most explosive players Friday against Hillsborough (4-1).
Sophomore QB Josh Grady, one of the top passers in the county with 410 yards and three touchdowns, will be out this week with a hamstring injury while senior WR Rodney Lyons, who leads the team with 224 yards and two touchdowns, will be out for at least three weeks with a leg injury, Coach Marquel Blackwell said.
Also, Durant senior RB Ryan Rice, one of the county's leading rushers with 458 yards and five touchdowns, will miss the next 2-3 weeks after suffering a separated shoulder, Cougars coach Mike Gottman said. Rice injured the shoulder during Durant's 10-0 victory over Brandon on Friday.
Juniors John Hicks and Antonio Morris will split the bulk of the carries out of the backfield while Rice is out, Gottman said.
VOLLEYBALL: The annual Tampa Bay Invitational, hosted by Tampa Prep, will be held Friday and Saturday at the University of Tampa Bob Martinez Complex. The 16-team tournament will include nationally ranked Berkeley Prep, Durant, Tampa Prep, Lakeland, along with 2007 Class 3A state runner-up Pine Crest and nationally ranked Orlando Timber Creek.
