Drivers in Sarasota can get gas today for less than $3 a gallon.
They might have to wait in line for a while to get it.
Cars started backing up about noon today after the Dodge Store at Fruitville and Beneva roads posted the price of regular, unleaded gas at $2.94.
By rush hour they needed police assistance to control traffic at one of Sarasota's busiest intersections.
This marked the third price drop in four days for the Dodge store. On Friday, gas was $3.21. It dropped to $3.16 on Saturday, and the store ran out of gas before 1 p.m.
Exactly one year ago this week, the average gas price in the Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice market came in even higher at $2.83 a gallon but still lower than today's $2.94, said Rosenda Calloway, of AAA's Sarasota office.
Officials with Dodge's parent company, Park Oil, say the cost of petroleum has dropped and the company has been able to pass that savings along to its customers. However, Park officials say they don't know how long the $2.94 price will hold.
The Sarasota store received a shipment of 10,000 gallons of regular unleaded Monday night. Just before 4 p.m. today, 1,000 gallons of premium arrived at the station at a cost to customers of just $3.18 a gallon.
The Dodge Store is open until midnight.
