TAMPA - Authorities recovered a sport utility vehicle from Old Tampa Bay on Monday that belonged to a man whose body was found in the Bay last month.
Jason Michael Downey, 31, met friends at a bar called Georgie's Alibi in St. Petersburg on Sept. 18, authorities said. The Tampa man left about 2 a.m. and headed north on Interstate 275, but was never seen again.
An angler found Downey's body three days later in the water at Fourth Street North and Interstate 275. St. Petersburg police had investigated the death as suspicious, and then someone called in a tip about a crash involving Downey's Toyota RAV4.
The Florida Highway Patrol now thinks Downey's Toyota crashed on the Howard Frankland Bridge when he tried to pass a Chevrolet SUV driven by Michael Bell of Lakeland. Downey's truck went over the concrete barrier wall and into the water.
Bell never reported the crash.
Authorities are waiting for forensic and toxicology results.
