YMCA's Survivor-Style Contest In Riverview Aids Kids

RIVERVIEW - Jill Andrew wouldn't normally strap her 50-something self into a giant bungee-cord slingshot, but it's for a good cause.

Andrew and other adventurous types will face the slingshot seat and rock-climbing wall, play tug-of-war and compete in more fun feats at the YMCA Corporate Challenge: Survivor! at Camp Cristina in November.

A few teams registered early, and more are welcome to join in the annual competition, which pits corporate and civic teams against one another in a daylong Survivor-style showdown at the Y's 65-acre outdoor adventure site.

Team registration fees pay for summer camp scholarships and swim lessons for local children and families who can't afford YMCA memberships.

Camp Cristina program director Bryan Beckham said five teams of six to 10 members registered in 2007 and raised about $5,000 in entry fees and donations, enough to send dozens of children and families to camp and YMCA summer programs.

Andrew twice participated in the event with a team from the Riverview Chamber of Commerce, which earned second-place bragging rights a year ago. This year, the adult living facility director formed her own team with nine co-workers, and they intend to bring it on.

"This year, I have the winning team," Andrew said.

COST: The $500 registration fee per team covers activities, breakfast and lunch. Proceeds benefit YMCA's Building Strong Kids Campaign, which provides summer camp scholarships to children and families who qualify for financial assistance.
