TALLAHASSEE - The excuses were there for Jody Allen's choosing.
Eight players on the FSU punt team were not on that unit a year ago. There were plenty of new faces on the kickoff team. Graham Gano is still limited in making a full contribution as kicking specialist and punter. At least five veterans were limited or unavailable for special teams Saturday against Miami because of injuries.
"There are no excuses for what happened the other night," said Allen, FSU special teams coordinator.
Allen took the blame for a miserable showing in which the punt team blew two snaps, one which led to a safety, and Travis Benjamin returned six kicks for 185 yards.
"Obviously, we made a lot of mistakes," Allen said. "Anybody can look out there and see we did not have a good night special teams-wise. Special teams kind of magnify the old football adage that it's a game of inches. A few inches here, a few inches there and then all of a sudden you've got a major catastrophe on your hands.
"It's my job to be anal about those inches, the split seconds that you take your eye off the ball a little bit before you catch it, the wrong angle here and there and make sure that doesn't happen."
