Published: October 9, 2008

DENVER - A 25-year-old man was indicted Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the drive-by shooting death of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams on New Year's Day 2007.

Willie D. Clark faces 39 counts, including murder, attempted murder, assault, crimes of violence and a weapons violation, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said.

Clark is in federal custody in a separate case. He was long considered a "person of interest" in Williams' slaying but is the first suspect to be indicted.

Williams, a former Oklahoma State standout, was shot and killed while riding in a rented limousine early Jan. 1, 2007, after leaving a Denver nightclub. He was 24.

BUCS: Former University of South Florida LB Ben Moffitt has signed as a member of the practice squad.

Moffitt, a four-year starter for USF, previously had signed a free-agent deal with the Houston Texans, but was cut before the regular season began.

COLTS: Marvin Harrison is being sued by a man who says he was shot in the hand and body in April by the wide receiver. Harrison, who was never arrested or charged, is being sued by Dwight Dixon for $100,000 in damages in a suit filed in Philadelphia on Sept. 2.

COWBOYS: Cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was involved in a fight with one of his bodyguards, according to Dallas police, the night before attending a previously scheduled team meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

No one was arrested and no one will be charged in connection with the fight late Tuesday night at The Joule, an upscale downtown hotel.

JETS: Safety Eric Smith will sit out Sunday after the NFL denied his appeal of a one-game suspension and fine for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Arizona's Anquan Boldin.

PANTHERS: Placed kick returner Ryne Robinson on injured reserve after he failed to make progress from a preseason knee injury and signed former Wake Forest receiver Kenneth Moore to take his roster spot.

PATRIOTS: Quarterback Tom Brady reportedly had surgery on his left knee Monday in Los Angeles, a month after a season-ending injury.

RAMS: Released receiver Eddie Kennison, then had to re-sign him after getting an unfavorable medical report on Dane Looker, who had a concussion Sept. 28. Looker will have additional tests designed to rule out an aneurysm after a CAT scan that cleared him from a concussion revealed a brain abnormality.

SAINTS: Placed kicker Martin Gramatica on injured reserve and re-signed sixth-round draft pick Taylor Mehlhaff to take his place.
