A Lakeland man was arrested today, accused of growing marijuana at his animal boarding business, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
Parkway Pet Resort, 2818 Franklin St., Lakeland, is about 500 feet away from the sheriff's office fleet maintenance department, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer said in a statement.
Owner Jeffery Greer, 48, who lives on the property, was charged with cultivation of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for drug use, possession of marijuana over 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A search warrant was served today on three buildings on the property, including a warehouse. Deputies found more than 20 mature marijuana plants, assorted drug paraphernalia and a grow cabinet that held about 10 full-sized sized plants ready for harvest, the sheriff's office said.
Greer told deputies that he purchased the grow cabinet on the Internet for $2,500 and was growing the pot because he did not like buying it, a criminal arrest affidavit states."
Parkway Pet Resort boards dogs, cats and birds, deputies said. After Greer was arrested, a relative went to the business to take care of the animals, Eleazer said.
Greer was taken to Polk County Jail.
