SARASOTA COUNTY — A middle schooler brought a gun to campus and showed it to a friend on Thursday, authorities say.
The boy, whose identity was not immediately released, was in police custody but had not been charged as of Thursday evening.
The student showed a friend the small-caliber pistol at Brookside Middle School, says a district spokesman. The friend told administrators and a school resource officer about the gun.
It was found, unloaded, in his backpack.
The child, says district spokesman Scott Ferguson, faces expulsion from Brookside. The school was planning to send a letter home to parents.
He could face of a felony charge.
