Published: October 9, 2008

TAMPA - When LSU visits Florida on Saturday night, the most talented defensive end will be sitting in the stands.

University of South Florida DE George Selvie is expected to attend the LSU-UF game as a guest of UF defensive line coach Dan McCarney, who was Selvie's position coach last season at USF. Selvie and the Bulls are off this week.

"We need all the help we can get," McCarney joked about having Selvie at the game in Gainesville. "He is going to give me a few snaps."

Last year in McCarney's only season with USF, Selvie earned the school's first consensus All-American honors. He was second in the nation with 14.5 sacks and had a national-best 31.5 tackles for loss, one shy of the NCAA record.

OPEN DATE PLANS: So what does USF coach Jim Leavitt have planned this weekend with an open date?

"Watch some film," he said.

Leavitt said he'll also watch some games — specifically his alma mater Missouri against Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

"I'm very impressed the way [Missouri is] coached and how they play," Leavitt said. "I'm impressed with the leadership of [QB] Chase Daniel. He's enjoyable to watch.

"There's some awfully good games, but I'd just as soon be playing. We need to see if we can get some guys healthy somehow. Whether we will or not, I don't know. It's been very frustrating.

"We need people back, there's no question. We're not quite the same team without a number of guys in there. It's no excuse, it's just reality. We were missing a number of guys on our defense last game and it showed somewhat. Reality is we need to get some guys back if we can. If we can."

ODDS AND ENDS: USF's regulars did conditioning drills Thursday as the practice consisted of a Bull Bowl scrimmage between non-starters and redshirted players. … Leavitt said most of USF's assistants will be out recruiting this weekend. The Bulls are off today and return to practice Monday.
