ST. PETERSRBURG - In an effort to help downtown businesses and foster a pedestrian-friendly and safe atmosphere, city officials begin the process of changing the flow of traffic on First and Second streets North on Sunday.
Workers will resurface and convert First and Second streets from one-way to two-way traffic, said Joe Kubricki, director of the city's transportation and planning department.
The switch to two-way traffic will be from Central Avenue to Fifth Avenue North, he said.
To make the switch, workers have to repaint median strips, adjust traffic signals and yank up all the one-way signs.
The project should take about three weeks to complete.
"It is part of an overall master plan to convert minor streets from one-way to two-way flow as part of effort to support businesses and a more walkable downtown area," he said.
"It's been proven in other communities that one-way streets are a detriment to business and increase traffic speed and flow," he said.
