TAMPA - Two deputies helped save a man's life Thursday after he had a heart attack while driving and crashed his car into a tree, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The driver, 60-year-old Tampa resident Carl Johnston, apparently lost control of his car and hit a tree on the shoulder of Wilsky Boulevard just before 8 p.m., deputies said.
Deputies Kari McVeigh and Tylor Lenzmeir found Johnston in his 2002 Chevrolet and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue workers said Johnson was breathing on his own because of the efforts of McVeigh and Lenzmeir.
Johnston was taken to Town & Country Hospital. He suffered no other injuries in the crash.
