Admiral Says Afghanistan Policy 'Wrong Direction'

Published: October 10, 2008

WASHINGTON - The highest-ranking U.S. military officer warned Thursday that the situation in Afghanistan will likely get worse next year and that it will take time to turn it around because it has been headed in "the wrong direction" for the past two years.

Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the security situation can't improve until there is economic and political development in Afghanistan and until the United States and its coalition partners embrace a strategy linking Afghan and Pakistani issues.

"The trends across the board are not going in the right direction," Mullen said. "It will be tougher next year unless we get at all these challenges."
