PLAYERS WHO HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE
COCO CRISP
Ah, the arch-villain.
Crisp, who said he was upset with an earlier play at the bag by Rays SS Jason Bartlett, slid in hard on 2B Akinori Iwamura on June 4. The next night, Rays RHP James Shields hit Crisp and a bench-clearing brawl ensued.
Crisp and Shields exchanged punches - none of them connected. "I'm not upset at all," Crisp said. "We fought. Then there were three or four guys on one."
It was a clear premeditated message sent by Manager Joe Maddon - and Shields. MLB handed down suspensions to Crisp, Shields, Iwamura and Jonny Gomes.
JON LESTER
Lester, the left-hander who got the win in last season's clinching Game 4 of the World Series, has three starts against the Rays in 2008 - and three victories.
He allowed just two earned runs in those games (for an 0.90 ERA), walking six and striking out 19 in 20 innings.
For his career, in seven starts, Lester is 4-0 against the Rays with a 3.38 ERA.
CARLOS PENA
Pena has his plenty of big home runs for the Rays, but none were bigger than the two he had against Boston in September.
His three-run homer in the 14th inning - over the Green Monster - gave the Rays a riveting 4-2 victory on Sept. 10.
His seventh-inning solo homer tied the game on Sept. 16, positioning the Rays for a 2-1 walk-off win at Tropicana Field.
DAN JOHNSON
Not on Tampa Bay's postseason roster. But certainly not forgotten, either.
Johnson was called up from Triple-A Durham on Sept. 9, but he couldn't get from Pennsylvania to Fenway Park in time, so Joe Maddon scratched him from the starting lineup.
With the Red Sox three outs away from taking over first place, Johnson, a pinch-hitter, led off the ninth inning against Jonathan Papelbon and smashed a game-tying solo homer. The Rays won, 5-4. And Johnson cemented himself forever in Rays lore.
