Two people died Friday night and three others were seriously injured after the 2007 Mustang they were riding in – driven by a 16-year-old - struck a palm tree and a utility pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Mustang, driven by 16-year-old Patrick A. Mellan of Lakeland, was traveling east on the Polk Parkway shortly after 9 p.m. when troopers say Mellan lost control. The Mustang slid into the roadway's south shoulder, then struck a palm tree and a utility pole before coming to a stop facing east along the road's south shoulder, according to an FHP report.
Kennan Mullins, 16, Lakeland, died at the scene. Warren Williams, 27, of Plant City, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he later died, according to the report. Derrick Austin, 19, and Eddie Gallon, 17, both of Lakeland, were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Gallon is listed in critical condition and Austin is listed in serious condition.
Mellan was also taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
The crash is being investigated, according to the report, which states that investigators do not yet know if anyone in the Mustang was wearing a seatbelt.
No charges have been filed.
