ST. PETERSBURG - The St. Petersburg Fire Department has given the all-clear after an ammonia leak at a seafood wholesaler Saturday evening.
Around 9 p.m., the St. Petersburg Fire Department went to Key West Fresh and Frozen, 333 16 Ave. S., where the odor was detected. Firefighters spotted the anhydrous ammonia cloud there, but said no one was in the building and no injuries were reported.
A reverse 911 call was issued to residents in the area – 15th Avenue South to 22nd Avenue South and east of Fourth Street South including the Tropical Shores neighborhood – asking them to stay indoors with the windows closed.
Around 11 p.m., the fire department had stopped the ammonia leak and its tests of the air quality indicated the fumes had dissipated and the air quality surrounding the seafood processing plant is back to normal.
