ZEPHYRHILLS - A groundbreaking was held Friday for the Gulfside Center for Hospices on Dean Dairy Road.
The 12-bed, 21,000-square-foot hospice residence will serve patients and their loved ones from central and east Pasco County.
The Gulfside Center for Hospice Care will be able to accommodate the highest level of patient care needs.
The Gulfside Center for Hospice Care was designed by BMK Architects of Sarasota and will be built by W.G. Mills Inc. The $6.4 million project is expected to be completed by next summer.
Ten of the private rooms have lake views, while the other two will face their own gardens, a news release stated. Wheelchair-accessible paths will meander around the lake, so patients and their loved ones can enjoy covered seating areas, gazebos and a walking path. Inside, the Gulfside Center for Hospice Care will be decorated in a Tuscan theme and will include a salon, massage therapy room, family rooms and children's play area. The facility will have a town square where loved ones can gather.
It will be either a temporary stay for people with symptoms and pain that is out of control or a last respite for patients who can no longer be maintained at home and need the end-of-life, higher level of care, president and CEO Linda Ward said previously.
"We applied for our certificate of need, and we were awarded that last year, based on the need in the community and because there is no in-patient care facility in Zephyrhills right now," she said.
Established in 1988, Gulfside Regional Hospice runs thrift stores in New Port Richey, Hudson, Dade City and Zephyrhills. It operates a bereavement community center and two hospice facilities in New Port Richey, as well as a hospice house at The Edwinola retirement facility in Dade City.
