DADE CITY - The evidence was there early on Friday night, but if the Zephyrhills defense had no idea, Pasco running back Jamall Haynes announced it.
On the tail end of a 22-yard gain, with Haynes running through, over and around Bulldogs defenders, he jubilantly bellowed, "I'm the man!"
"The Man" and his Pasco teammates earned a dominating 24-0 victory against Zephyrhills in the 51st installment of the intense rivalry. It's the first victory for Pasco (5-1) in the series since 2004.
"In the beginning, I thought it was going to be hard, but my offensive line came through for me," said Haynes, who churned up 205 yards and two scores on 21 carries. "After that, I just started running hard. They started talking trash. They've been talking all week, and I just wanted to show them what time it was."
Haynes wasn't alone in attempting to prove a point. The Pirates defense harassed Zephyrhills (2-4) quarterback Tyler Guy the entire night, catching him for eight sacks and intercepting four of his passes.
Entering the game, Pasco coach Tom McHugh said the path to victory was to run the ball and pass when they wanted to, not when they needed to. That was accomplished from the outset.
Of the first six plays of the game, four were Haynes runs. The senior had 51 yards on the drive, capping it with a 40-yard sprint to the right for a touchdown.
On Pasco's fourth drive, Haynes ran through the Zephyrhills defense for a 25-yard scoring run and a 14-0 advantage with 7:12 left in the first half.
Haynes finished above the 200-yard mark for the first time in his high school career.
"Jamall's a hard runner, and I know he's hard to tackle," McHugh said. "He's a short guy, low to the ground, very, very, very strong in the weight room. He squats 450 pounds and bench presses 325 pounds. He's a real strong kid."
Jamaal Sampson's second interception of the night led to Brennan Allen's 36-yard field goal at the 8:11 mark of the third quarter, stretching the Pasco lead to 17-0.
Jamie Byrd's fourth-quarter interception gave way to 10-yard D.J. Clower-to-Josh Johnson scoring pass.
Zephyrhills was held to minus-36 yards rushing and 59 yards of offense one week after the Bulldogs blanked Wesley Chapel, 28-0.
The Bulldogs' leading rusher was Alex Paniagua with 19 yards on 11 carries.
