TAMPA - A broken sewer line has spilled about 300,000 gallons of sewage into Sweetwater Creek in the Town N' Country area and residents are warned to avoid contact with the creek and where it flows into Tampa Bay for the next several days.
The break occurred along Comanche Avenue just east of Hanley Road and workers located it about 4:30 a.m. after a treatment plant noticed the flow had decreased.
The creek runs south and flows into the Bay in the Courtney Campbell Causeway area.
Workers from the county sewer department are working with a private contractor to repair the 20-inch line and the job is expected to last through today.
The utility department is diverting sewage from nearby lift stations into tanker trucks.
The break occurred in a section of new pipeline about 100 yards east of a similar break that occurred Sept. 12.
The utility department will notify environmental agencies, take samples from the creek and post signs warning people to avoid contact with the water.
