Economic uncertainty is on the rise, and so is office gossip.
Office workers, perhaps fearful of their jobs and worried about their companies' futures, are playing office politics and gossiping more than they were five years ago, according to a recent poll. In fact, 55 percent of those surveyed said politicking at work is on the rise.
While more than half said they saw an increase in workplace maneuvering, 54 percent said it was best to follow what was going on and be in the know, but not participate directly in office politics. And nearly a third said it was best to avoid any kind of gossip or alignments completely.
Accountemps, a unit of staffing company Robert Half International, conducted the random telephone survey of 522 U.S. adult office workers in January 2008.
